Solar farm land in Dorset.
Dorset has open chalk downs and broad vales, but much of the county is protected, and most of its grid is run by a different operator from Devon's. Here's what matters locally.
What matters for solar in Dorset.
Two councils decide
Since April 2019, Dorset Council and BCP Council (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole) have been the local planning authorities.
Over 40% is protected
The Dorset National Landscape covers about 42% of the county, from Lyme Regis to Poole Harbour. Part of Cranborne Chase National Landscape is in Dorset too.
A new local plan is coming
Dorset Council expects to adopt a new local plan in 2029. It has a renewable energy resource assessment (2025) and is preparing a landscape study for wind and solar.
A different grid operator
Most of Dorset's network is run by SSEN, not NGED. A study published by Dorset Council in 2023 found many substations could run short of capacity by 2030.
Who decides in Dorset.
Most solar farms in Dorset are decided by Dorset Council. In Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, BCP Council decides. Solar farms up to 100MW are decided by the local planning authority. Larger schemes go through the national planning process, after the threshold rose from 50MW on 31 December 2025.
Planning authorities
- Dorset Council (unitary since April 2019)
- BCP Council (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole)
Protected landscapes
- Dorset National Landscape (about 42% of the county)
- Part of Cranborne Chase National Landscape
- Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (Dorset and East Devon Coast)
Until the new Dorset Council Local Plan is adopted, the local plans for the former district areas still apply.
Grid access in Dorset.
Most of Dorset is served by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). A few substations in the far west are run by National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED). A grid study published by Dorset Council in 2023 found many substations could run out of spare capacity, for demand and generation, by 2030.
Grid connections reform applies across Great Britain, including SSEN's network. The queue has been reordered, and new connection offers are going out in batches, with the last expected by mid-March 2027. Projects with land secured and planning moving now get priority.

A steady rent, at no cost to you.
Every site is different. We give you a clear figure once we know your land. How solar rents work →
Rent
Solar rents are often around £1,000 per acre a year, linked to inflation, for the life of the lease.
Lease length
Most new solar leases run for around 30 to 40 years. At the end, the land is restored.
No cost to you
The project pays for surveys, grid and planning.
Keep farming
Sheep can graze between the panels, and the land can be managed for wildlife.
Solar in Dorset: questions
Who decides a solar farm planning application in Dorset?
Dorset Council for most of the county, or BCP Council in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Schemes over 100MW go through the national process instead.
Can I put a solar farm in the Dorset National Landscape?
It is much harder. The National Landscape covers about 42% of Dorset and has the highest landscape protection, so most solar farms are on land outside it. We check your site's designations first.
How much do solar farms pay per acre in Dorset?
Solar rents are often around £1,000 per acre a year, linked to inflation, but the figure depends on the grid connection, the site and the market. We give you a clear figure once we know your land.
Is there grid capacity for solar in Dorset?
It depends on your nearest substation and the queue ahead of it. Most of Dorset is on the SSEN network. A free grid check is the quickest way to find out.
