Solar for your business, with no upfront cost.
A funder pays for, owns and looks after the solar on your roof or land. You buy the power it makes at a fixed price, usually lower than the grid.
How a solar PPA works.
PPA stands for power purchase agreement. You get solar on your site without buying it.
- A funder pays for the system. They pay to design, install, own and maintain the solar on your roof or land.
- You buy the power. You pay an agreed price per unit (kWh) for the electricity you use from it. The price is fixed, often with a small agreed yearly rise.
- You keep the grid. When the sun isn't shining, or you need more, you buy from your normal supplier as usual.
The PPA price is usually lower than what you pay for grid electricity, so you save from day one.
PPA or buy outright?
Both cut your bills. The difference is who pays, who owns it and who keeps the savings.
| Solar PPA | Buy outright | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | None | You pay, or use asset finance |
| Who owns it | The funder | You |
| Maintenance and insurance | The funder | You |
| Your saving | A lower price per unit than the grid | The power is yours, plus any export income |
| Best for | Keeping cash free for the business | The best long-term return |
Not sure which suits you? We set out both, side by side, for your site. See commercial solar payback.
Is a PPA right for your site?
A PPA usually suits a business or farm that has:
- High daytime electricity use, all year round.
- Enough space: roughly 1 square metre of roof per kilowatt, or around 1.6 hectares of land per megawatt.
- A long-term site. If you lease your premises, you will usually need around 10 years or more left, and your landlord's consent.
- Good credit, because the funder is relying on you for many years.
Every system still needs planning sorted and a grid connection agreed. We handle both. See how a commercial install works.
What to check in the contract.
A PPA is a long agreement, typically 10 to 25 years and most often 15 to 25.
At the end of the term
You can usually extend the agreement, buy the system, or have it removed. Some agreements hand the system over to you at the end.
If you move or sell the business
Look for a clear buyout price, and what happens if a new owner takes over the site.
Your roof
Fixing a roof under panels is harder, so check its condition first. The roof must be made good at the end.
Who looks after it
The funder owns the system, so maintenance, insurance and monitoring are normally part of the deal.
Types of PPA.
- On-site PPA: the solar is on or next to your site. This is the most common kind for businesses and farms.
- Sleeved PPA: the power comes from a solar farm elsewhere, through the grid, with a licensed supplier handling it.
- Virtual (synthetic) PPA: a financial contract at an agreed price, with no physical power delivered. Usually for large companies.
If a solar farm could be built right next to your site, private wire may also be an option.
How we help.
One team from the first look at your bills to the day the system switches on.
- Check the fit. We look at your bills or half-hourly data, your roof or land, and the local grid.
- Compare the options. PPA, buying outright or asset finance, set out in plain English.
- Arrange the PPA through our funding partners.
- Handle planning and the grid. Our in-house Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) and the G99 application to the network operator.
- Manage the install. Installs delivered with certified partner installers.
Solar PPA questions
Is there really no upfront cost with a solar PPA?
Yes. The funder pays for the system and its upkeep. You pay only for the power you use from it, at an agreed price per unit.
How long does a solar PPA last?
Typically 10 to 25 years, most often 15 to 25. At the end you can usually extend it, buy the system or have it removed.
Can I get a PPA if I lease my building?
Often, yes. You will usually need around 10 years or more left on your lease, and your landlord’s consent.
Who maintains the panels under a PPA?
The funder owns the system, so maintenance, insurance and monitoring are normally included.
What happens if I sell the business or move?
Check this before you sign. A good PPA sets out a clear buyout price and what happens if a new owner takes over the site.
Could a PPA work for you?
Send us your site postcode and a rough yearly bill. We'll tell you honestly if a PPA fits.
