Battery storage development

Battery storage, taken to ready-to-build.

We find, secure and consent battery storage sites across the UK, on their own or alongside solar.

What we develop

Three kinds of battery site.

Batteries store power when there is plenty and release it when it is needed, helping the grid take more solar and wind.

  • Standalone battery sites

Batteries on their own, close to a substation. They charge when power is cheap and plentiful, and export when the grid needs it.

  • Batteries alongside solar

Added to a new or existing solar farm, sharing the grid connection. The solar can be stored and sold later in the day.

  • Batteries for businesses

Smaller systems behind the meter, to cut peak costs or make more of rooftop solar. See commercial solar.

What makes a good site

Five things we look for.

  • Close to the grid

Near a substation with room to import and export. The grid connection matters more than anything else.

  • A small, flat footprint

Battery sites need far less land than solar. Flat, well-drained ground keeps costs down.

  • Away from homes

Some distance from neighbours keeps noise from cooling fans and inverters well within limits.

  • Outside flood zones

Batteries and electrical kit need to stay dry, so lower flood risk land is easier to consent.

  • Good access

A route in for lorries during construction, and for the fire service at all times.

How we work

Screen. Secure. Consent. Ready-to-build.

  1. Screen

We check grid capacity, flood risk, access and neighbours before anyone spends money.

  2. Secure

Land terms agreed and a grid application made for import and export.

  3. Consent

Our in-house Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) leads planning, with noise, landscape and fire safety covered.

  4. Ready-to-build

Land, grid and planning in place, ready to fund and build with partners.

FAQ

Battery storage questions

Who decides planning for a battery storage site?

In England, the local planning authority decides battery storage applications, whatever their size. Battery storage is outside the national infrastructure planning regime.

How much land does a battery site need?

Much less than a solar farm of the same capacity. The exact area depends on the size of the system, the layout and space for access and fire safety. We size it for your site.

Is battery storage safe?

Sites are designed to fire safety guidance from the National Fire Chiefs Council, with spacing, water supply and access for the fire service. The local fire service is consulted on the planning application.

Can batteries go alongside a solar farm?

Yes. Adding batteries to solar can share one grid connection and let the solar power be stored and sold later in the day.

I own land near a substation. Could it host a battery site?

Possibly. Land close to a substation with grid capacity is exactly what battery developers look for. Use our free land check and we will tell you honestly.

Got a site near a substation?

Tell us where it is. We'll check the grid and planning picture and give you an honest answer.
